Submission Guidelines
BlackFlash publishes writing that explores ideas and theories behind contemporary photographic and new media art in Canada. Articles proposed to BlackFlash for publication should express well-researched, educated, and insightful ideas and opinions. BlackFlash is not an academic journal. We have a diverse readership and we ask that articles be written in accessible language that does not presume our readers understand specialized academic jargon or concepts. BlackFlash accepts unsolicited submissions on an ongoing basis which are reviewed by our editorial committee. Response to an unsolicited submission can take six to eight weeks.
The deadline for submissions is as follows:
Fall: May 1; Winter: September 1; Summer: January 1.
Proposals can be submitted for the following formats:
- Feature Articles run between 2000–4000 words.
- Reviews run between 500–1000 words.
- Interviews run between 1000–2000 words.
Article proposals must include:
- A 1-2 page outline of the proposed article
- Images of the work: 10 max. medium resolution images in jpg format on a CD.
- Previous writing samples (2 max.)
Artwork proposals must include:
- Images of the work: at most ten medium resolution images in jpg format on a CD.
- An artist CV
- An artist Statement or project explantion limited to one letter sized paper with 12 point font.

Pay Rates
BlackFlash pays $0.15 per published word on publication and contributors will receive two issues of the issue their work appears in.
Please Note:
- When submitting please familiarize yourself with BlackFlash’s content before submitting. Read two copies of the magazine and read articles on our website.
- BlackFlash magazine does not employ freelance photographers. Any submissions of this nature will not be replied to.
- Material will not be sent back unless accompanied by a self addressed stamped envelope.
- BlackFlash no longer accepts submissions by email.
- Please keep in mind that BlackFlash is about photography and new media art. We do not publish articles on painting, drawing or sculpture unless it relates to the previously mentioned fields.
